The Toyota Hilux earns its keep around Cannock. It tows trailers out towards Cannock Chase, carries tools for trades in Norton Canes and Heath Hayes, and does farm work on the edges of Rugeley. For owners who rely on it, protecting it is worth thinking about properly, not just locking it and hoping.
Toyotas in the theft figures
Toyota as a make has moved up the national lists. In What Car? and QuestGates' analysis of DVLA data for 2025, Ford, BMW and Toyota were the three most stolen makes, with Toyota replacing Land Rover in third place (Fleet News). Closer to home, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner reported in 2024 that Toyota thefts in the West Midlands had risen by 109% in 2023 (West Midlands PCC).
Cannock sits in Staffordshire Police's area, which is calmer than its neighbour. Staffordshire Police recorded 4.15 vehicle offences per 1,000 people in the year ending March 2026, 19th of 43 forces, though the total rose 0.6% on the year before (ONS police force area data tables). Those figures count theft of and from vehicles and interference. With the West Midlands force area a short drive away, a mid-table figure is no reason to relax.
How modern Toyotas are targeted
These figures cover Toyota as a whole, not the Hilux on its own, but the methods used on modern vehicles are broadly the same. At a high level:
- Relay attacks on keyless entry, where the fob's signal is passed on so the vehicle thinks the key is nearby.
- Key programming through the diagnostic port, adding a new key once someone is inside.
- CAN injection, where fake "key present" messages are sent into the vehicle's internal network. Security researcher Dr Ken Tindell documented a UK Toyota RAV4 stolen this way in 2022 (Ken Tindell).
None of these needs a broken window, and none needs your key for the last two. Our guide to keyless car theft and immobilisers explains why an aftermarket immobiliser covers all three.
The immobiliser: stopping it starting
A CAN-bus immobiliser works independently of the Hilux's own key system. However convincing the key, relayed signal or injected message, the engine won't start until the immobiliser is satisfied too.
- CAN-Phantom CP24: a PIN entered on the vehicle's own buttons, with no tag or fob to carry. It works on 12 V and 24 V vehicles, from cars and vans to lorries and tractors, and is made in Stafford. It isn't Thatcham-approved, which CAN-Phantom says openly.
- Pandora Microbot: authorised by a Bluetooth tag, a PIN on the vehicle's buttons, or both, with your phone able to act as the tag. It holds a Thatcham Category 2e certificate and needs no subscription.
- Scorpion X-Series: arms itself every time the ignition goes off and is disarmed by a PIN on the vehicle's buttons or a paired ScorpionTrack S5 tag.
Which of these suits your Hilux depends on its year and specification. We check that before we quote, and we'll tell you plainly if one isn't right for it.
The tracker: getting it back
An immobiliser stops the Hilux being driven away. A tracker helps if it's taken anyway, loaded onto a trailer, say. Pairing the two gives you prevention and recovery.
- Meta Trak Deadlock: a Thatcham S5 tracker with built-in no-tag-no-start immobilisation, watched 24/7 by a Secure Operating Centre. Meta Trak publishes £189.95 a year, or £499.95 for 3 years.
- ScorpionTrack S5-VTS with the Scorpion X-Series: the tracker's driver tag also disarms the immobiliser, so one tag covers both. Scorpion publishes the tracker subscription from £155 a year.
If your insurer has asked for a tracker, send us the wording. The S5 or S7 guide explains what each category means.
Hilux questions
I use my Hilux for work. Will a PIN slow me down?
It's one short sequence on the vehicle's own buttons before you set off. If several people drive it, a tag-based system such as the Microbot may suit better than a PIN everyone has to know. We'll go through the options.
Can you fit it on a farm or at a yard?
Yes. We're fully mobile and come to wherever the Hilux is kept, across Cannock, Hednesford, Rugeley and the surrounding area.
Does an immobiliser guarantee a better insurance premium?
No. Insurers set their own terms and the policy wording decides. We'll match the system to any requirement they've given you.
Secure your Hilux
