Car Key Programming

A key that won't start the car, or a remote that won't open the doors, can often be reprogrammed at the vehicle rather than replaced.
  • Fully insured
  • IMI Master Auto Locksmith
  • IMI CANBUS immobiliser fitting
  • Approved fitter: CAN-Phantom · Pandora · Scorpion · Meta Trak

01 · Is this you?

Sounds familiar?

  • The car says the key isn't recognised, or the immobiliser light stays on
  • The remote won't lock or unlock, even with a new battery
  • A key works the door but won't start the engine
  • A replacement key or remote needs programming to the car

Keys and remotes lose their programming more often than people expect: after a flat car battery, a dropped fob, or work on the car's electrics. Before anything is replaced, we check whether the key simply needs programming again.

If the key itself has failed, we'll tell you, and quote for a new one programmed to the car at the same visit.

02 · Quick quote

A key quote in a minute.

Your reg, the kind of key and what's happened. We'll check what your car needs and call or text you back with a fixed price.

Call-outs Mon–Sat 9am–5pm. We aim to be with you within an hour.

Which key does the car take?

We'll only use your details to reply. Keys are only made for the owner or registered keeper, so we'll ask to see the V5C and photo ID at the car.

03 · How it works

How it works.

  1. 01

    Tell us the symptoms

What the key does and doesn't do, and the car's reg, make, model and year.

  2. 02

    Test the key

At the car we check the key's chip, remote and battery, to find out whether it needs programming or replacing.

  3. 03

    Program it

The key is programmed to the car with dedicated key equipment, and any keys you no longer have can be removed at the same time.

  4. 04

    Tested before we go

Locking, unlocking and starting, on every key you have.

04 · Before we start

What we'll need to see.

A key programmed to a car can start it, so we only make or program keys for the owner or registered keeper, and only once we've seen the paperwork. It's the check you'd want if it were your car and someone else was asking.
  • V5C logbook

Or another document naming you as the registered keeper, such as a finance or lease agreement for the car.

  • Photo ID

Driving licence or passport, with a name and address that match the ownership document.

  • Registration and VIN

The reg is enough to start. The 17-digit VIN (bottom of the windscreen, or on the V5C) lets us confirm exactly which key the car takes.

05 · Cost

A fixed price, first.

The price depends on the car and the key it takes, so it's worked out for yours: send the reg, or the make, model and year, and you'll get a fixed quote before anything is booked.

If you're claiming on insurance or key cover, ask for an itemised invoice with the vehicle details on it.

Before you enquire

Questions, answered.

01Could it just be the battery?

Often it is, for a remote that won't lock or unlock. Try a new battery first: the type is printed on the old one, commonly a CR2032 or CR2025. If the car won't start with the key, a battery in the fob is less likely to be the cause.

02How do I start a keyless car with a dead fob?

Most keyless cars have a backup: holding the fob against a marked spot on the steering column or the start button, or in a slot in the console. The car's handbook shows where. If that doesn't work, the fob may need programming.

03What equipment do you use?

Dedicated key programming equipment: the Advanced Diagnostics Smart Pro, Autel IM608 and Lonsdor K518 Pro, all carried in the van.
