Broken Key Extraction

Key snapped in the door, the boot or the ignition? The broken piece is removed without damaging the lock, and a new key can be cut at the same visit.

01 · Is this you?

Sounds familiar?

  • Part of the key has snapped off inside the door lock or boot
  • The key has broken in the ignition
  • The key is stuck in the ignition and won't turn or come out

Trying to pull a snapped blade out with pliers or glue usually pushes it further in and damages the lock. Leave it where it is and don't use the lock until it's out.

The broken piece is extracted with specialist tools, and the lock checked. If the blade snapped because the lock is worn or the key was, we'll tell you, and a new key can be cut from the broken one.

02 · Quick quote

A key quote in a minute.

Your reg, the kind of key and what's happened. We'll check what your car needs and call or text you back with a fixed price.

Call-outs Mon–Sat 9am–5pm. We aim to be with you within an hour.

Which key does the car take?

We'll only use your details to reply. Keys are only made for the owner or registered keeper, so we'll ask to see the V5C and photo ID at the car.

03 · How it works

How it works.

  1. 01

    Leave it

Don't try to remove the piece yourself, and don't use the lock.

  2. 02

    Tell us the car

The reg, and where the key has broken: door, boot or ignition.

  3. 03

    Extracted

The broken piece is removed with specialist tools, without damaging the lock.

  4. 04

    A key that works

A new key can be cut and programmed at the same visit if you need one.

04 · Before we start

What we'll need to see.

A key programmed to a car can start it, so we only make or program keys for the owner or registered keeper, and only once we've seen the paperwork. It's the check you'd want if it were your car and someone else was asking.
  • V5C logbook

Or another document naming you as the registered keeper, such as a finance or lease agreement for the car.

  • Photo ID

Driving licence or passport, with a name and address that match the ownership document.

  • Registration and VIN

The reg is enough to start. The 17-digit VIN (bottom of the windscreen, or on the V5C) lets us confirm exactly which key the car takes.

05 · Cost

A fixed price, first.

The price depends on the car and the key it takes, so it's worked out for yours: send the reg, or the make, model and year, and you'll get a fixed quote before anything is booked.

If you're claiming on insurance or key cover, ask for an itemised invoice with the vehicle details on it.

Before you enquire

Questions, answered.

01Can I get the broken piece out myself?

It's best not to. Pliers, tweezers and glue usually push the blade further in or leave residue in the lock, which turns a simple extraction into a lock repair. Leave it where it is and don't use the lock until it's out.

02Can a new key be made from the broken one?

Usually. Keep both pieces: the blade can be read to cut a new one, and the chip in the head can often be reused or a new key programmed to the car at the same visit.
