A Ford Ranger in Wolverhampton is often a working vehicle first: parked on a drive in Tettenhall or Penn overnight, on site in Bilston during the day, and sometimes carrying tools or materials in the back. That gives a Ranger owner two things to protect, the truck itself and whatever is in it, and no single product covers both. This post sets out how we'd layer an alarm, an immobiliser and a tracker on a Ranger, and what each layer does.
The local picture
432 vehicle crimes were recorded within a mile of Wolverhampton city centre between August 2025 and July 2026 (police.uk street-level crime data). On police.uk, vehicle crime covers thefts of and from vehicles and vehicle interference, so it includes break-ins as well as vehicles taken.
The make matters too. Ford was the most stolen make in the West Midlands Police area in 2025, with 2,375 thefts, although that was down 19.4% on the year before (West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, May 2026).
What's in the load bed is a risk of its own. Nationally, 30,848 tool theft offences were recorded in 2025, worth almost £19m, according to Freedom of Information requests to police forces (26 of 46 replied) (Insight DIY). That analysis doesn't publish a West Midlands figure.
How pickups are targeted
At a high level, the risks to a modern Ranger are the same electronic routes used on cars: relay attacks on keyless entry where it's fitted, programming a new key through the diagnostic port, and CAN injection through the wiring. Separately, the cab and load are targets for break-ins that have nothing to do with taking the truck. Our guide to keyless car theft and immobilisers covers the electronic routes.
The three layers
1. An alarm, for break-ins
An alarm draws attention when someone tries the doors or gets into the cab. Two we'd consider:
- Scorpion S32: a Thatcham Category 2-1 upgrade alarm that uses the vehicle's original remotes, with perimeter protection and ultrasonic interior sensing. No subscription.
- Pandora Mini BT: a Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser for cars and vans, with at least two ignition immobilisation points. It arms from the vehicle's own fob, a Bluetooth tag or the app, and resists key cloning and relay attacks. No SIM, so nothing to renew.
2. An immobiliser, so it can't be driven away
- CAN-Phantom CP24: a British-made CAN-bus immobiliser for 12 V and 24 V vehicles, from cars and vans to lorries and tractors. The engine won't start until a PIN is entered on the vehicle's own buttons, and a valet PIN lets a garage move it without yours. It isn't Thatcham-approved, as CAN-Phantom states.
- Pandora Microbot: authorised by tag, PIN or both, with a Thatcham Category 2e certificate and no subscription. The one to choose if your insurer wants a Thatcham-certified immobiliser.
3. A tracker, to get it back
- ScorpionTrack S5-VTS: Thatcham S5, with two driver-recognition tags and 24/7 theft monitoring with police liaison. Scorpion's published subscription starts at £155 a year.
- Meta Trak S7 ATS: Thatcham S7, no tag to carry, fits any vehicle type. Meta Trak's published subscription is £119.95 a year.
Or all in one package
The Scorpion Defender S5 combines an S5 tracker with a Thatcham Category 2-1 alarm, and adds key-clone protection: the engine only starts with a driver tag present. Scorpion lists it for cars, vans and motorhomes, so we'd confirm it for your Ranger first.
Ranger questions
Do I need all three layers?
Not necessarily. If your insurer has set a condition, start there: the policy wording decides whether you need a tracker and which category. Beyond that, an immobiliser is the layer that stops the truck being driven away, so it's usually where we'd suggest starting.
Will an alarm protect tools left in the back?
An alarm protects the vehicle it's fitted to, but it isn't a substitute for taking valuables out. The simplest advice is still the best: don't leave tools in the truck overnight. West Midlands Police's page on preventing car and vehicle theft has further advice.
Can you fit it at my yard or on site?
Yes. We come to your home, and most jobs are done in a single visit.
