For a lot of trades in Wolverhampton, the Mercedes Vito is the business. It carries the tools, the stock and the day's work, and when it goes missing the loss runs well beyond the van itself. A tracker won't stop every theft, but it changes what happens next: you know where the van is, you're alerted when it moves, and on a monitored system someone is working with the police to get it back.
Why van owners around Wolverhampton take this seriously
Van theft is falling nationally, but the Birmingham area stands out. An analysis of DVLA data by Tempcover found 10,013 vans were stolen in the UK in 2025, down 16% on 2024, and the Birmingham postcode area had the most van thefts of any UK postcode area, with 1,446 over 2024 and 2025 (Business Motoring). Wolverhampton has its own WV postcode, so that isn't a Wolverhampton figure, but it shows the pressure on vans across the wider region.
The same analysis found white vans made up 73% of thefts. A plain white Vito blends in, which suits a thief as much as it suits you. And what's inside often matters as much as the van itself.
How vans are usually taken
At a high level, modern vans are targeted in the same ways as cars: keyless signals relayed from a fob, new keys programmed through the diagnostic port, or messages injected into the vehicle's wiring. Some are simply towed or loaded. A tracker's job is to raise the alarm and help recovery whichever route is taken. If you want to stop the engine starting in the first place, that's an immobiliser's job, and our guide to keyless car theft and immobilisers covers the difference.
S7 or S5 for a Vito?
Thatcham certifies trackers as S7 or S5. If your insurer has asked for a tracker, the policy wording decides which you need, so check it first.
S7: monitored tracking
An S7 tracker is watched around the clock by a monitoring centre. If the van is stolen, the team tracks it and works with the police to recover it once you report the theft. There's nothing for drivers to carry, which suits a van shared between several people.
- Meta Trak S7 ATS: Thatcham S7, insurance approved, with movement and tow alerts in the Meta Trak app. Meta Trak publishes £119.95 a year, or £329.95 for 3 years.
- ScorpionTrack S7-ALS: Thatcham S7 with 24/7 monitoring and police liaison, and garage and transport modes in the app. Scorpion publishes £139 a year, £499 for life, or £12.49 a month.
S5: adds driver recognition
An S5 tracker does everything an S7 does and adds driver-recognition tags. If the van moves without a tag present, the monitoring centre is alerted straight away, before you've noticed it has gone.
- Meta Trak S5 VTS: Thatcham S5 with a driver ID tag. Meta Trak publishes £189.95 a year, or £499.95 for 3 years.
- ScorpionTrack S5-VTS: Thatcham S5 with two driver tags, battery-disconnect alerts and a backup battery. Scorpion publishes from £155 a year, or £585 for life.
- Meta Trak Deadlock: the same S5 tracking with built-in immobilisation, so without the tag the engine won't start.
Our S5 or S7 guide sets out how to read your policy wording.
Alerts you actually get
The apps are where a tracker earns its keep day to day. On the Meta Trak systems you get live location, movement and tow alerts, battery alerts and geofences, with several vehicles on one login. ScorpionTrack's app shows live location and alerts, with privacy, garage and transport modes, so a van in for servicing or on a recovery truck doesn't cause a false alarm.
More than one van?
If your insurer hasn't asked for an approved tracker and you'd rather watch the vans yourself, Meta Trak Shield is self-monitored, with movement, tow and battery alerts going straight to your phone. It isn't insurance approved and there's no monitoring centre, so it's not a substitute where a policy names S5 or S7.
Vito tracker questions
Can you fit it at our yard or on site?
Yes. We come to the van at your home, and the tracker is hidden, tested and activated with you before we leave.
Will a tracker cover the tools inside?
It tracks the van, not the tools. If the van is taken with the tools on board, recovering it gives you the best chance of getting both back, but tools taken from a parked van aren't tracked.
Does it work if the van goes abroad?
Meta Trak states coverage across the UK and EU (excluding Switzerland). ScorpionTrack tracks across the UK, Ireland and Europe.
