A BMW X5 on a drive in Edgbaston or Harborne is a big, valuable car that opens and starts without the key ever leaving your pocket. That convenience is exactly what thieves look to exploit. The good news is that the gap keyless entry leaves can be closed with a second check the car's own system doesn't have.
BMW theft in context
BMW was the second most stolen make in the UK in 2025, behind Ford and ahead of Toyota, according to QuestGates' analysis of DVLA data, reported by Fleet News. Locally, Birmingham recorded 12,039 vehicle offences in the year ending March 2026, a rate of 10.2 per 1,000 people, against an England and Wales average of 5.1 (ONS police force area data tables). Those offences include thefts from vehicles and interference as well as cars stolen, but the gap to the national average is clear.
The government has taken electronic theft seriously enough to legislate. The Crime and Policing Act 2026 created offences for possessing, making or supplying electronic devices for vehicle theft, and its factsheet cites Crime Survey data that signal manipulation was involved in 36% of vehicle thefts in 2019 to 2020 (GOV.UK factsheet).
How keyless BMWs are targeted
At a high level, there are two main routes:
- Relay attacks. The signal from a keyless key inside the house is relayed to the car, so it believes the key is beside it.
- Key programming through the diagnostic port. Once inside, a new key can be programmed to the car.
Neither needs force, and neither needs your actual key. A signal-blocking pouch helps against the first, as West Midlands Police advise, but it does nothing about the second. Our guide to keyless car theft and immobilisers explains why.
What we'd fit to an X5
Pandora Microbot: stop the start
The Pandora Microbot connects to the car's electronics and blocks the engine start until you're authorised: by an encrypted Bluetooth tag, a PIN entered on the car's own steering-wheel or dashboard buttons, or both. Your phone can act as the tag. It holds a Thatcham Category 2e immobiliser certificate, shows no LED or other sign once fitted, and needs no subscription. Service mode in the app lets a garage or valet start the car without your authorisation while it's being worked on.
The Microbot doesn't track the car, which is where the next system comes in.
Meta Trak Deadlock E-TEC: stop it and watch it
The Meta Trak S5 Deadlock E-TEC is a Thatcham S5 tracker with DEADLOCK immobilisation: without the driver tag present, the engine won't start. It's monitored 24/7 by a Secure Operating Centre, linked to police control rooms once a theft is reported.
BMW is on Meta Trak's published E-TEC compatibility list (version 1.5.2, October 2025), which covers push-to-start BMW models, including the i and iX models. The list excludes any vehicle that can be put into Drive without pressing the start button, so we check your exact X5 against it before quoting. The subscription is £189.95 a year or £499.95 for three years, at Meta Trak's published prices.
If you'd like the diagnostic port closed as well, Meta Trak Deadlock PRO adds an OBD port lock that you open and close from the app.
Choosing between them
| Pandora Microbot | Meta Trak Deadlock E-TEC | |
|---|---|---|
| Stops the engine starting | Yes | Yes: no tag, no start |
| Tracks the car | No | Yes, Thatcham S5 |
| Monitoring centre | No | 24/7 |
| Subscription | None | £189.95 a year |
You can fit either one, or both, so the car is hard to start and watched if it moves. If your insurer has asked for something specific, the policy wording decides which we recommend.
BMW X5 questions
Is my X5 on the E-TEC list?
The list covers push-to-start BMWs, but it goes model by model. Send us the model and year and we'll check it against the current list before quoting.
Can my BMW still be serviced at a dealer?
Yes. The Microbot has a service mode in the app, and Deadlock PRO's OBD port can be unlocked from the app before a service and locked again afterwards.
Will I notice either system day to day?
Once you're authorised, the car drives exactly as it did before. With a tag on your keyring, there's usually nothing extra to do.
