VW Transporter Tracker Fitting in Walsall: S7 or S5 for Vans

Choosing a tracker for a Volkswagen Transporter in Walsall: S7 asset tracking vs S5 driver recognition, the systems we fit and what each one costs.

The Volkswagen Transporter does a lot of different jobs around Walsall. It's a tradesman's van in Willenhall, a delivery van out of Darlaston, and a weekend camper on a drive in Aldridge. What it's used for changes which tracker makes sense, and so does what your insurer has asked for. This post explains the choice between Thatcham S7 and S5 for a Transporter, and what each option involves.

The local picture

Between August 2025 and July 2026, 605 vehicle crimes were recorded within a mile of Walsall town centre, with the busiest month in December 2025, when 73 were recorded (police.uk). That count covers thefts of and from vehicles and vehicle interference, so it isn't the number of vans stolen, but it gives a sense of the pressure on vehicles parked in and around the town.

Nationally, 10,013 vans were reported stolen in 2025, down 16% on 2024, and white vans made up 73% of van thefts over the two years (Business Motoring, reporting Tempcover's FOI analysis of DVLA data). Fewer thefts is welcome, but a plain white van is still the most common target.

How vans are taken

At a high level, vans face the same electronic methods as cars: relaying the signal from a keyless key, programming a new key through the diagnostic port, and injecting messages into the vehicle's wiring. Vans can also be towed away. A tracker doesn't stop any of these on its own, but it means the van is watched and can be followed once it moves.

S7 or S5: what the difference means

Thatcham S7 is monitored tracking. A secure operating centre watches for unauthorised movement around the clock and works with the police to recover the vehicle once a theft is reported. There's nothing to carry, which suits vans shared between several drivers.

Thatcham S5 does everything S7 does and adds driver-recognition tags. If the van moves without a tag present, the monitoring centre is alerted straight away, often before you've noticed the van has gone.

If your insurer has asked for a tracker, the policy wording decides which you need. Our guide to choosing S5 or S7 explains how to read it.

When S7 asset tracking makes sense

The Meta Trak S7 ATS is Meta Trak's asset tracking system and fits any vehicle type, from vans to motorhomes. For a work Transporter with several drivers, or a camper that's parked for weeks at a time, monitored tracking without tags is often enough, especially where the insurer asks for S7.

When S5 is worth it

If the van is higher value, or your insurer asks for S5, driver recognition adds an earlier warning. Meta Trak Deadlock PRO goes further: without the tag, the engine won't start, and the van's diagnostic port stays locked until you unlock it in the app.

If no one has asked for a tracker

Meta Trak Shield is a self-monitored tracker at £75.95 a year: alerts come to your phone and there's no monitoring centre. It isn't insurance approved, so it only suits vans where the insurer hasn't asked for a tracker.

Transporter tracker questions
