Range Rover Sport S5 Tracker Fitting in Sutton Coldfield

Insurer asked for a Thatcham S5 tracker on your Range Rover Sport? How driver-recognition tags work, and the S5 systems we fit in Sutton Coldfield.

For many Range Rover Sport owners in Sutton Coldfield, the conversation about a tracker starts with the insurer rather than the car. A renewal or a new policy arrives with a condition attached: a Thatcham S5 tracker, sometimes with a deadline for fitting it. This post explains what S5 actually means, how the driver-recognition tag works day to day, and which systems we fit to meet that wording on a Range Rover Sport in Four Oaks, Mere Green, Walmley and across Sutton Coldfield.

The local picture

Sutton Coldfield is quieter than the city centre, but not immune. 197 vehicle crimes were recorded within a mile of Sutton Coldfield town centre between August 2025 and July 2026 (police.uk street-level crime data). That count covers thefts of and from vehicles and vehicle interference, not only cars stolen.

The national picture for this model has improved. Range Rover Sport thefts fell by about 20% in 2025, according to What Car?'s analysis of DVLA data (Fleet News). The manufacturer has played its part: JLR says its security upgrades, rolled out to more than 65,000 UK vehicles, cut thefts of 2018 to 2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models by more than 40% (JLR). Even so, it remains a high-value car, and insurers still set tracker conditions on it.

How high-value SUVs are targeted

At a high level, modern thefts rely on the car's own electronics rather than force: relay attacks on keyless entry, programming a new key through the diagnostic port, and CAN injection through the wiring. Our guide to keyless car theft and immobilisers covers each one. A tracker doesn't stop these on its own; it makes sure that if the car moves without you, someone knows straight away.

What S5 adds: the driver-recognition tag

An S7 tracker is monitored around the clock. An S5 tracker does the same and adds driver recognition. You carry a small tag on your keyring and drive as normal. If the car moves without a tag present, the monitoring centre is alerted immediately, before you've even noticed the car has gone. That's why insurers often ask for S5 on higher-risk vehicles.

  • ScorpionTrack S5-VTS comes with two tags, tracks across the UK, Ireland and Europe, alerts you if the battery is disconnected and has its own backup battery. Its tag can also disarm a paired Scorpion X-Series immobiliser, so one tag covers both.
  • Meta Trak S5 VTS reports to a 24/7 NSI-accredited Secure Operating Centre, linked to police control rooms once a theft is reported, with coverage across the UK and EU (excluding Switzerland).
  • Deadlock puts tracking and prevention in one fit: without the tag, the engine won't start.
  • Deadlock PRO also locks the diagnostic (OBD) port, which you unlock from the app when the car goes in for a service.
  • Scorpion S5+ adds no-tag-no-start, and if the car is taken with the tag, Scorpion's recovery team can immobilise it remotely.

Questions about S5 on a Range Rover Sport

What happens if I drive off without the tag?

The system treats it as a possible theft, because that's what it's designed to spot: the monitoring centre is alerted when the car moves without a tag present. On Deadlock or the S5+, the engine won't start at all without it. Keeping the tag on your keyring avoids both.

Will my insurer accept either brand?

Both Meta Trak and ScorpionTrack S5 systems are Thatcham S5 and insurance approved, but some insurers also name approved brands. The policy wording decides, so send it to us and we'll match the system to it before quoting.

Does the subscription move with me if I sell the car?

Meta Trak's subscriptions don't pass to a new owner. Scorpion's own documents differ on transfers, so we'll confirm the terms for your subscription before you buy.
