Land Rover Defender Tracker in Solihull: When Your Insurer Asks

Insurer asked for a tracker on your Land Rover Defender in Solihull? What S5 and S7 mean, and the Thatcham S5 trackers and Deadlock option we fit.

For many Land Rover Defender owners in Solihull, the tracker question doesn't start with them. It starts with a line in the insurance schedule: a tracker must be fitted, often within a set number of days, and it must meet a named Thatcham category. If that's where you are, this post explains what the wording usually means and what we'd fit to a Defender to meet it.

Why insurers ask in this part of the world

Insurers price risk partly on where a vehicle is kept, and the West Midlands has a lot of vehicle crime. In the year ending March 2026, West Midlands Police recorded 9.07 vehicle offences per 1,000 people, the second-highest of the 43 police forces in England and Wales, just behind the Metropolitan Police (ONS police force area data tables).

Solihull itself recorded 2,117 vehicle offences in the same year, a rate of 9.6 per 1,000 people, against an England and Wales average of 5.1 (ONS, same tables). That was down 9.9% on the year before, which is good news, but the rate is still well above the national figure. "Vehicle offences" here means thefts of and from vehicles plus interference, not only vehicles stolen.

How a Defender is typically targeted

Like most modern 4x4s with keyless entry and push-button start, the Defender faces the same broad methods as other premium cars: relay attacks on keyless entry, key programming through the diagnostic port, and CAN injection through the wiring. We keep this high level. The point is that none of these need the thief to have your key, so a tracker and, ideally, an immobiliser are there for the moments when the factory system is fooled.

S7 or S5: reading the policy wording

Thatcham certifies trackers in two categories that insurers commonly ask for:

  • S7 is a tracker monitored around the clock by a secure operating centre. If the vehicle is stolen and you report it, the centre tracks it and works with the police to get it back. There's nothing to carry.
  • S5 does everything S7 does and adds driver-recognition tags. You carry a small tag on your keyring, and if the vehicle moves without one present, the monitoring centre is alerted straight away, often before you know it has gone.

Insurers often ask for S5 on higher-risk vehicles. The policy wording decides, so check it for the category and for any named brands. Our S5 or S7 guide walks through the wording in more detail.

The S5 trackers we'd look at for a Defender

TrackerCategoryImmobilisationSubscription, 1 year
ScorpionTrack S5-VTSS5No£155
Meta Trak S5 VTSS5No£189.95
Meta Trak DeadlockS5Yes: no tag, no start£189.95

Subscriptions are the manufacturers' published prices, and both offer longer terms.

  • ScorpionTrack S5-VTS comes with two driver-recognition tags, tracks across the UK, Ireland and Europe, alerts you if the battery is disconnected and has its own backup battery. Subscriptions run from a year up to lifetime cover, or monthly.
  • Meta Trak S5 VTS reports to a 24/7 Secure Operating Centre that is NSI accredited and linked to police control rooms once a theft is reported. The app gives live location, movement and tow alerts, and geofences.
  • Meta Trak Deadlock is the same S5 tracking with DEADLOCK immobilisation added: without the tag present, the engine won't start. That turns a recovery system into one that also tries to stop the theft happening.

If you're choosing between the two S5 trackers, our Meta Trak S5 vs ScorpionTrack S5 comparison sets them side by side. A ScorpionTrack S5 can also be paired with a Scorpion X-Series immobiliser, so one tag disarms both.

Defender tracker questions

My insurer gave me a deadline. Can you fit in time?

Tell us the date when you get in touch. We'll match the tracker to your wording first, then book the fit. We come to the Defender at your home, and activate the tracker with you before we leave.

Does a Scorpion "Defender" package mean it's made for my Land Rover?

No. Scorpion's Defender packages share the name but aren't Land Rover specific. They combine a tracker with an alarm and can suit many vehicles. We'll explain whether one makes sense for yours.

Will I have to carry another thing on my keys?

With an S5 tracker, yes: a small driver-recognition tag. That tag is what lets the monitoring centre tell the difference between you driving and someone else.
