A basic code reader tells you a fault code. Dealer-level equipment tells you what the car's modules are actually doing, and lets us change it: coding, programming and resetting systems a code reader can't reach. For many modern faults, that's the difference between guessing and fixing.
Code readers vs dealer-level equipment
A cheap plug-in reader shows the engine's generic fault codes and clears the warning light. That's often where it stops.
Dealer-level equipment talks to all of the car's modules, not just the engine: body, immobiliser, gearbox, ABS, airbags and more. It can read live data, run tests, code replacement parts to the car and program control units. We work with dealer-level software covering 66 makes, so the work happens on your driveway rather than in the dealer's workshop — the makes we cover are listed on the diagnostics page.
Keys are a separate job with its own equipment. We carry dedicated key machines for cutting, coding and programming keys, which is why a lost-key job and a warning-light job can be done on the same visit.
Warning lights worth checking promptly
- A flashing engine light usually points to a serious misfire. Stop driving and get it checked.
- Several lights at once after starting can point to a weak battery or a charging fault rather than several separate problems.
- Key or immobiliser warnings, such as "key not detected", can mean a failing fob battery, a key that has lost its programming, or an immobiliser fault.
Battery faults and electrical gremlins
Modern cars are sensitive to voltage. A tired battery can set off warning lights, stop keyless entry working and make modules behave oddly. A battery and charging test is quick, and rules out the cheapest cause first.
Module coding and programming
Some jobs need programming, not just a scan:
- Coding a replacement part, such as a module or battery, so the car recognises it
- Programming keys to the car's immobiliser
- ECU programming, for example after a unit has been replaced
Our engineer holds IMI accreditation in ECU programming.
Where we work
Diagnostics happen at the car, wherever it's parked. We work across Walsall, Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, Solihull, Cannock, Wolverhampton and Stafford.
Next step
Tell us the make, model and year and what the car is doing, and we'll say whether it's a job for diagnostics, programming or both, with a fixed quote before anything is booked. See diagnostics & programming.
